DCM: The Successful Entrepreneur’s Choice.
About.com was the Internet’s first “guided search” website, utilizing expert guides to help consumers find accurate and engaging content. Company-certified subject specialists author and maintain over 650 branded sites providing expert guidance on more than 17,000 topics. About.com offers business and home users the world’s largest collection of Web site reviews and hand-picked links as well as original feature articles and hundreds of topic-specific chat rooms, bulletin boards, newsletters and more. About.com completed its IPO on the Nasdaq in October 1999. In 2001, the company was acquired by PRIMEDIA, Inc. and subsequently by The New York Times Company (NYSE: NYT) in 2005.
When CEO Scott Kurnit first presented the concept for About.com to Dixon Doll, Dixon was intrigued by the unique concept of building a network of expert guides in thousands of subject matters and supporting the website through advertising. DCM invested in the first round of funding, based on the strengths of the CEO and his business plan. DCM worked closely with the company to assist in financing and build partnerships in Silicon Valley. By the time the company went public in 1999, it had grown to become one of the top ten websites in the world.
Based on the success of About.com in the U.S., David Chao worked closely with the company to establish a Japanese affiliated company, All About (Jasdaq: 2454) in 1993. All About offers extensive, targeted resources for Japanese users. Resources are gathered and produced by local Japanese guides who have expertise in their specific topic fields. All About went public on the Jasdaq at a valuation of $700 million.
